YouTube has been really pushing its users to join YouTube Premium lately. The main draw for most is the ad-free experience, without the need for an ad blocker, and the company is cracking down on ad blocker use. But YouTube knows that it’s not just about being ad-free that will attract potential paying Premium subscribers.
YouTube Premium Updates
YouTube recently announced a range of new features for its Premium subscribers. These updates include a “Jump ahead” feature, a new picture-in-picture option, and some “experimental” features. The platform also hinted at upcoming updates like new subscription plan options.
Jump ahead
Premium subscribers can now easily skip to the most popular parts of a video with the “jump ahead” feature. By double-tapping the right side of a video and clicking the button that appears, users will be taken to the most commonly skipped parts. This feature is powered by YouTube’s internal watch data and AI.
Picture-in-picture YouTube Shorts
YouTube now allows users to watch shortform videos via picture-in-picture mode while multitasking on Android devices. This feature is great for those who enjoy passive video consumption.
New “experimental” features
In July, Premium subscribers can test out upcoming features before everyone else. These include Shorts Smart Downloads and Conversational AI, where users can ask AI questions about videos they’re watching.
More updates to come
YouTube is planning to introduce more Premium controls, download options, and potentially new plan options like family plans. The platform is also exploring ways for subscribers to share benefits with friends. Stay tuned for more updates on YouTube Premium.
