WhatsApp has always been a bit stingy when it comes to group chat size, but they’re slowly getting with the program.
More the Merrier
In May, the company bumped up the group size to 512 people and allowed for file sharing of up to 2GB. Now, in the latest beta version for Android and iOS, users can add up to a whopping 1,023 participants to a group. It’s currently only available to a select few beta testers, but it’s likely to roll out more widely soon.
This move brings WhatsApp closer to Telegram, which can accommodate massive groups of several hundred thousand members. But having a huge group is pointless if you can’t manage it effectively. Luckily, WhatsApp is also working on new tools to give admins more control over large groups. This includes a membership approval system and a list of pending group participants for quicker screening.
Coming Soon
But wait, there’s more! WhatsApp has even more upgrades planned for group chats. They recently launched Communities, a feature that allows different groups to connect into a single “community,” albeit in a limited release back in August.
