TikTok, the popular viral video platform, is still facing a potential ban in the U.S. as 2024 comes to an end. The January 19, 2025 ban date for TikTok is quickly approaching.
The Supreme Court of the United States has agreed to hear an appeal filed by TikTok and its parent company ByteDance, with oral arguments set to begin on January 10. President-elect Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated on January 20, the day after the pending TikTok ban, is urging the Supreme Court to grant a stay on the ban deadline date, claiming that only he can solve the issue and prevent the ban.
Trump’s Plea to Save TikTok
Trump has presented multiple reasons to the Supreme Court as to why he believes he is uniquely qualified to address the national security concerns associated with TikTok being owned by a China-based company and to save the platform from a ban. In his message, Trump highlights his large following on TikTok, his successful reelection campaign that utilized the platform, and points to other instances of social media bans to argue for his intervention. He also mentions his experience as the founder of the social media platform Truth Social to showcase his expertise in the field.
Trump’s Shifting Stance on TikTok
Discussions of a TikTok ban began during the first Trump administration, with efforts to partner with U.S.-based Oracle to meet security concerns. After the 2020 election, the ban was abandoned. However, under the Biden administration, the concerns were renewed, leading to current actions to pressure ByteDance to sell TikTok. Trump, who utilized TikTok for his 2024 campaign, has expressed a change of heart towards the platform after initial intentions to ban it.
