The brand new ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas special trailer spills more secrets than you realize

In a recent Doctor Who special, the 15th Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) bid farewell to his 14th incarnation (David Tennant) and companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) to embark on new adventures. The next human companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), is introduced in a Disney+ trailer for the upcoming Christmas Day special, “The Church on Ruby Road.”

In the trailer, Gatwa’s Doctor meets Gibson’s Ruby Sunday in a nightclub at Christmas where the Doctor is dancing in a vest and tartan kilt. Their encounter begins when Ruby accidentally knocks her drink off a table, and the Doctor retrieves it, sparking a new adventure through time and space.

The trailer provides new details about the Christmas special, giving a deeper insight into the story compared to the BBC trailer released earlier. The episode following the 60th anniversary special, ‘The Giggle,’ controversially showed Gatwa’s Doctor emerging from Tennant’s in a unique process called “bi-generation,” allowing Tennant’s Doctor to survive in an unexpected twist.

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies blends traditional Christmas “Who” elements with fresh ideas for Gatwa’s groundbreaking tenure as the Doctor. The actor, born in the 1990s, is the first Doctor from that era, adding a new dynamic to the series. The trailer also introduces Ruby’s mother, Carla Sunday (Michelle Greenridge), hinting at a deeper exploration of companions’ families.

The story revolves around a race of goblins in a flying clipper ship that steals babies, with a goblin’s baby-eating song featured in the episode. The Doctor is seen in the snow holding a baby, wielding a larger sonic screwdriver shaped like a TV remote with new tech upgrades. This sonic screwdriver bears a Gallifreyan translation of a Rwandan phrase, emphasizing the importance of sharpness of mind in defeating adversaries.

The Doctor’s sharp mind will be put to the test as he unravels the mystery behind his meeting with Ruby Sunday in the nightclub. Viewers can expect surprises and twists when Doctor Who returns on Disney+ and the BBC in the UK on Christmas Day.
