I had the opportunity to try out the Pixel 9 Pro XL, and let me tell you, it’s time to rethink our understanding of the new Pixel lineup. Google has shifted from a dual-phone strategy to a triple-phone deal, with the addition of the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The top-tier option is the Pixel 9 Pro XL, followed by the Pixel 9 as the entry-level choice, and the Pixel 9 Pro in the middle.
It seems like Google is aiming to compete with Samsung and Apple by offering a lineup comparable to theirs. The Pixel 9 series now comes with a higher starting price of $799, signaling Google’s intention to rival the big players in the market.
With the previous Pixel 8 series, consumers had a simple choice between a small phone and a large phone. However, the new Pixel 9 series presents two smaller options and a larger third choice, likely enticing many to opt for the standout Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Moving on to my initial impressions of the Pixel 9 Pro XL, let’s talk about the remarkable new Super Res Zoom feature. This upgraded zoom capability allows users to zoom in on subjects up to 30x, a significant improvement from the Pixel 8 Pro. During my test in Lower Manhattan, I was able to capture detailed images of a distant subject, showcasing the impressive zoom capabilities of the Pixel 9 Pro XL.
The Super Res Zoom feature not only enhances photography but also extends to video recording, with the addition of Video Boost for up to 8K video enhancement. Night Sight Video has also been improved for better captures in low-light settings.
Both the Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro feature the same camera system, including a 50MP wide camera, 48MP ultrawide camera, 48MP telephoto lens, and a 42MP selfie camera. The selfie camera has seen a significant upgrade from the Pixel 8 Pro, now boasting 42MP for high-quality self-portraits.
Overall, the Pixel 9 series introduces exciting new features and a revamped lineup that is sure to appeal to consumers looking for top-of-the-line smartphones.
I have to admit, compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the post-processing tweaks on the Pixel 9 Pro XL make me look much better in selfies (looking at you, Apple). Plus, the selfie camera now has autofocus.

New design that tweaks the camera bar
The Google Pixel series is known for its signature edge-to-edge camera bar. Now, Google transformed the funky feature from a bar to an island. Also, unlike the Pixel 8 series, the new Google Pixel 9 series’ camera bar is color matched with the chassis. The Pixel 9 Pro XL comes in Obsidian, Porcelain, Hazel, and Rose Quartz, with a silky matte glass finish that is easy to clean.
Stunning display
The Pixel 9 Pro XL features a 6.8-inch, 1344 x 2992 display, while the Pixel 9 Pro has a 6.3-inch, 1280 x 2856 panel. The Pixel 9 Pro XL has a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits, making the screen punchy, clear, and well-illuminated.
Battery life
With a larger battery capacity of 5,060 mAh, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is expected to outpace the Pixel 9 Pro in battery life. Both phones are rated for over 24 hours of battery life and up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver.
Mind-blowing AI
Thanks to the new Google Tensor G4 chip, the Pixel 9 Pro XL offers incredible AI features. The Add Me feature allows you to merge photos seamlessly, while the Reimagine feature lets you transform objects in photos. The Pixel 9 series is packed with innovative AI features that set it apart from the competition.
