After failed attempts to turn Twitter into a subscription platform, Elon Musk aims to transform the microblogging site into a video service. Subscribers to Twitter Blue can now upload 2-hour long videos, a significant upgrade from non-subscribers. The maximum video resolution is 1080p, with a file size limit of 8GB.
Despite the new feature, piracy seems to be the primary use case so far. Users have uploaded full-length movies like “Shrek the Third” and “Super Mario Bros. Movie.” However, Twitter lacks key features for longform video content, such as a standalone video player and video quality issues.
While Musk promised a monetization program for creators, it has yet to materialize. Twitter’s approach to longer videos remains uncertain, especially in terms of copyright enforcement. It remains to be seen how these changes will impact the platform’s future.
