Paul King addresses online criticism of ‘Wonka’ film.

The internet has been criticizing “Wonka” since its announcement. Initially, there were concerns about creating an origin story prequel to the classic “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” from 1971, which starred Gene Wilder in the lead role. The first image of Timothée Chalamet in costume triggered comparisons to Gonzo from “The Muppet Christmas Carol” rather than to Wilder. When the trailer was released last summer, there was a backlash on social media, with tweets mocking Chalamet’s performance and casting.

Paul King, known for his work on “Paddington” and “Paddington 2,” directed “Wonka.” Despite the online criticism, King defended the film as a joyful rebellion against cynicism and one of the best films of 2023. He acknowledged the skepticism from online viewers, comparing it to the initial backlash he faced with “Paddington.”

King emphasized the importance of staying true to Roald Dahl’s legacy in creating “Wonka.” He and co-writer Simon Farnaby worked closely with Dahl’s descendants, particularly his grandson Luke Kelly, who produced the film. King expressed a deep sense of responsibility in delivering a movie that would honor Dahl’s work and resonate with fans.

“Wonka” is set to premiere in theaters on Dec. 15, showcasing King’s commitment to creating a film endorsed by the Dahl estate and made with love.
