OpenAI to Launch AI-Powered Web Browser
According to a recent report by Reuters, OpenAI, the creator of the AI assistant ChatGPT, is on the verge of releasing a new web browser. The launch is said to be imminent, with plans for it to happen “in the coming weeks.”
The browser, which remains unnamed in the report, will heavily utilize AI technology and will feature a native chat interface for seamless access to ChatGPT. OpenAI already offers a search tool called ChatGPT Search, which can be added as a Chrome extension. It is speculated that this search tool will also be integrated into the upcoming web browser. Additionally, there are rumors that OpenAI might incorporate some of its AI agents, like Operator (an agent capable of performing browsing tasks on behalf of the user), directly into the browsing experience.
One possible motive behind this move by OpenAI could be to gain more access to user data and to seamlessly integrate its AI products into the browsing experience. With ChatGPT boasting 500 million weekly active users, the new browser could potentially attract a large user base quickly and pose a significant challenge to Google’s Chrome.
Speculations arise due to OpenAI’s expressed interest in purchasing Chrome in the event that Google is compelled to divest it, possibly as a result of the Google antitrust trial. A previous report by The Information even suggested that OpenAI is contemplating developing its own web browser.
