NBA Superstar LeBron James Takes Legal Action Against Unauthorized Use of His Likeness in AI-Generated Content
Unauthorized Use of Celebrities’ Likeness in AI-Generated Content
NBA superstar LeBron James has taken a stand against the unauthorized use of his likeness in AI-generated content by issuing a cease-and-desist letter to FlickUp, the company responsible for the AI image-generation tool Interlink AI. This action comes in response to the company allowing users to create AI-generated videos of high-profile NBA players, including James, Stephen Curry, and others. While some of the content generated was harmless, certain videos crossed the line into disturbing territory, prompting James to take legal action to protect his image rights.
Legislative Efforts to Address Nonconsensual AI-Generated Content
LeBron James’ legal action highlights a broader issue of celebrities facing unauthorized use of their likenesses in AI-generated content. Legislation is being proposed to address this growing concern, with bills such as the Take It Down Act criminalizing the publication of intimate imagery without consent, including deepfakes and AI-generated pornography. Other proposals like the NO FAKES Act of 2025 and the Content Origin Protection and Integrity from Edited and Deepfaked Media Act of 2025 aim to prevent unauthorized AI replication of a person’s voice and safeguard original works from misuse.
