Jonathan Bailey’s ‘sexy specs’ are a must-have in movies, trust me

It’s 2025, and it looks like culture is finally waking up to a truth that some of us have been shouting about for ages. And that truth is, there’s nothing sexier than a man in “slutty little glasses.”

Thanks to Jonathan Bailey, this summer is all about the “slutty little glasses.” In case you’ve been living under a rock, let me fill you in. The heartthrob Jonathan Bailey, known for his roles in Bridgerton and Wicked, is starring in one of this summer’s biggest movies, Jurassic World Rebirth. Playing Dr. Henry Loomis, Bailey is a lovable paleontologist with a heart of gold and, let’s face it, a very handsome face — complete with a delicate pair of glasses from Cubitts, to be exact, made with ultra-thin hexagonal titanium frames.

These glasses have been dubbed “slutty little glasses” by culture commentator Blakely Thornton. What makes them so fitting of this name? Is it the delicate frame? The playful hexagonal shape? Or is it simply the way they add an extra touch of charm to Bailey’s already handsome features?

Since Entertainment Weekly released the first images of Bailey in Jurassic World Rebirth back in December 2024, the internet has been buzzing with excitement. Fans have been raving about Bailey in his sexy glasses, and the phrase “slutty little glasses” has been popping up everywhere on social media and during the movie’s press tour. But it’s more than just a passing fad.

Happy “slutty little glasses” summer

Bailey has fully embraced the frenzy around his glasses, wearing different pairs of sexy specs to almost every press event for Rebirth. He has joyfully talked about them in numerous interviews on shows like The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, MTV UK, Extra, and the Today Show, just to name a few. (And yes, the phrase “slutty little glasses” sounds absolutely delicious in his accent.)

The Jurassic World Rebirth star has taken this fashion moment to the next level by announcing a collaboration between Cubitts and his LGBTQ rights charity, The Shameless Fund. They have released a pink-tinted pair of frames called “Loomis” after Bailey’s character, described as having “an unapologetic confidence.” These frames are priced at $250, with 50 percent of the proceeds going to The Shameless Fund.

“I’m thrilled that people are having a hormonal explosion linked to optical supports,” Bailey told Entertainment Tonight at a Rebirth premiere in June. “Glasses can go a long way.” In the same red carpet interview, Bailey called for a “summer of slutty glasses.” He gets it.

The origins and double standard of “slutty little glasses”

In his interviews, Bailey always gives credit to Thornton for coining the term “slutty little glasses.”

In an Instagram video posted in January, Thornton praised Bailey before the release of Rebirth, saying, “He was born to have a line of slutty little glasses… On and off screen, he is constantly refuting the Laney Boggs law of cinema that says characters with glasses are less f*ckable.”

Referencing the female makeover scenes in movies, Thornton highlights the gendered double standard of glasses in cinema. Female characters often undergo transformations from nerdy to attractive once they remove their glasses, as seen in movies like The Princess Diaries, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and Miss Congeniality. Even in the recent Wicked, Cynthia Erivo’s character ditches her glasses to catch Bailey’s eye as the charming Fiyero.

While women in film usually have to take off their glasses to be seen as attractive, men have to put them on. And suddenly, the ladies and queer folks are swooning.

Bailey is just the latest leading man to use this fashion trick to captivate an audience. The love affair between cinema and “slutty little glasses,” and their thicker-framed predecessors, dates back decades — and Bailey’s character in Jurassic World Rebirth fits right into that legacy.

The cinema history of “slutty little glasses”

Surprisingly sexy eyewear of all shapes and sizes can be found on countless leading men throughout cinematic history. Although glasses have become a recurring supporting player in the rom-com oeuvre, they have also found their way into other genres, cropping up in prestige dramas and even a few blockbuster action flicks.

Dashing Golden Age romantic comedy hero Cary Grant in the 1938 rom-com classic “Bringing Up Baby” is a notable example. Gregory Peck in “To Kill a Mockingbird” and Ryan O’Neal in “What’s Up, Doc?” also portray romantic heroes with professorial appeal, each with their own quirky charm.

Even Harrison Ford, known for his macho roles, has had his moments with “slutty little glasses.” Whether as Indiana Jones or a lovestruck businessman in “Sabrina,” Ford always adds a touch of geek chic to his characters.

Sexy Glasses in Rom-Coms

Glasses play a key role in many classic rom-coms, adding charm and vulnerability to the leading men. Take Hugh Grant’s characters in Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, for example. His tortoiseshell frames and slim spectacles accentuate emotional moments, making his characters even more endearing. Even Grant’s poor eyesight leads to hilarity in one of the best scenes of the film, proving that glasses can be both sexy and funny.

But why are “slutty little glasses” so hot? Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these glasses symbolize a different kind of male hero. They defy traditional masculinity, emphasizing intellect and vulnerability over machismo. A man with layers, with unexpected softness and steady intellect, can be instantly implied with just a pair of glasses. It’s no wonder that these frames are enjoying a moment in the spotlight, setting hearts aflutter with their timeless appeal.
