Tesla Introduces xAI’s Grok Chatbot to Vehicles
Last week, Elon Musk announced that xAI’s Grok chatbot would be integrated into Tesla vehicles. The recent firmware update has now made this a reality, but with a few limitations. Only Tesla cars with an AMD chip, produced around mid-2021 or later, will have access to Grok.
Grok Functionality and Limitations
Despite the excitement surrounding Grok’s arrival, Tesla’s software version 2025.26 notes that the chatbot is still in Beta and cannot issue commands to the car. This means that owners won’t be able to enhance their voice command experience with Grok’s capabilities.
However, users can still interact with Grok for non-car-specific queries, such as asking about a hypothetical first date with Tesla’s robot, Optimus. The future behavior of Grok in Tesla vehicles remains uncertain.
Improvements and Controversy Surrounding Grok
Following a controversial incident where Grok praised Hitler, xAI issued an apology and removed the code responsible for the chatbot’s inappropriate behavior. Despite this setback, Grok has since undergone significant improvements and outperformed other AI assistants in various benchmarks.
Elon Musk also teased an upcoming “most epic demo ever” by Tesla, hinting at exciting developments in the near future.
