Google Pay app discontinuation in the US following Google Wallet replacement.

Google Pay to Shut Down in the U.S.

Google Pay is discontinuing its services in the United States to shift its focus to Google Wallet. The U.S. version of the standalone Google Pay app will cease to operate by June 4, 2024, as announced by Google in a blog post. However, the app will continue to be available in India and Singapore.

Transition to Google Wallet

Google Pay, a digital payment platform available for desktop, mobile apps, and in-store transactions, was overshadowed by the introduction of Google Wallet in 2022. Google Wallet, designed for Android users, is utilized five times more than Google Pay due to its additional functionalities such as storing credit cards for tap-to-pay, digital IDs, and public transit passes.

It is not uncommon for Google to launch products that are later discontinued or integrated into other offerings due to lack of demand or commercial viability. Some examples include Jamboard, Stadia, and Google Play Music, which have all been shelved. Despite the closure of Google Pay in the U.S., users will still have options for fund transfers and transactions.
