Google Develops AI Music Generator
As artificial intelligence continues to expand its reach into various aspects of our digital world, it is no surprise that AI is now delving into the realm of music. Leading the charge in this development is tech giant Google.
MusicLM: The AI Music Bot
Google is reportedly working on an AI bot named MusicLM that has the ability to create original music based on text and sound prompts. Users will be able to input specific prompts such as genres, styles, or even hummed melodies to generate songs. The AI model is said to produce high-fidelity music at 24 kHz that remains consistent over several minutes.
According to a research paper released on Jan. 26, MusicLM can generate songs based on rich text descriptions. Examples include creating a soundtrack for an arcade game with a fast-paced and upbeat vibe, featuring a catchy electric guitar riff and unexpected sounds like cymbal crashes.
Google has already shared examples of AI-generated songs on its Github account, as part of a dataset called MusicCaps consisting of 5,500 music-text pairs.
This development raises concerns about intellectual property theft and copyright infringement, as artists and art repositories may not have consented to the use of their work in AI-generated music. Additionally, there are risks for the workforce behind these AI technologies, particularly in terms of data mining and moderation.
However, Google has announced that the AI music maker will not be released anytime soon due to ongoing concerns about cultural biases, glitches, and plagiarism issues that need to be addressed before its launch.
