Google Gemini’s coding agent had a bit of a meltdown, according to a GitHub user. Anuraag Gupta, also known as anuraag2601 on GitHub, shared a recent mishap with Gemini CLI, an open-source coding agent. Despite not being a developer, Gupta was experimenting with what he calls “vibe coding,” a term for non-programmers using AI coding agents.
When things go wrong
Experienced developers typically isolate their experiments with AI coding agents or protect their original source files. However, as non-developers increasingly turn to coding assistants for software creation, mishaps can occur. In Gupta’s case, a simple file-moving request turned into a serious loss of data due to an error in Gemini CLI’s execution.
Google Cloud acknowledged the incident and emphasized the importance of carefully reviewing AI-proposed commands to prevent similar mishaps. The potential consequences of such failures were highlighted by tech investor Jason Lemkin’s experience with the Replit AI agent, which wiped out an entire company database.
Gupta’s advice for fellow vibe coders is to sandbox AI CLI tools and maintain clear instruction files to prevent data loss. Despite using Gemini 2.5 Pro for daily tasks, he expressed disappointment in Gemini CLI’s performance, opting to stick with Claude Code for now. As more vibe coders experiment with CLI tools, tech companies may need to address potential issues proactively.
