Following reports of mass layoffs at Microsoft and its gaming division, Xbox, Sony-published video game Helldivers 2 has announced its upcoming release on Xbox next month.
In a shift from the past practice of keeping games exclusive to specific gaming systems, such as Sony games on Playstation and Microsoft games on Xbox, Helldivers 2 is set to be available on Xbox Series X and S starting on August 26. Originally launched on PlayStation 5 and PC in February 2024, Helldivers 2 quickly became a hit, selling millions of copies and remaining popular on Steam. The cooperative, third-person shooter is set in the 22nd century, pitting human soldiers against alien hordes to save Super Earth, with crossplay enabled for Xbox, PC, and PS5 players.
The news of Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox coincides with Microsoft releasing Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5, marking the first time the once Xbox-exclusive series debuts on PlayStation. Additionally, Xbox’s The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation in October.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer previously shared insights into the company’s strategy of expanding game availability across multiple platforms. In a podcast interview, Spencer emphasized the benefits of multi-platform releases for Xbox, strengthening the brand and allowing for investments in platform and hardware development.
