DoorDash faces lawsuit for alleged price discrepancy between iOS and Android users

A class-action lawsuit against DoorDash is accusing the food delivery service of charging iPhone users more than customers who order via Android. It seems you could be paying for that blue message bubble in ways you didn’t even realize. Filed in the U.S. District Court of Maryland, the case alleges that DoorDash engages in “deceptive, misleading, and fraudulent practices” by hiding unfair fees behind certain labels.

Allegations against DoorDash
The lawsuit claims that DoorDash charges an expanded range fee in various situations where it is uncalled for, including sending orders to restaurant locations further away from the customer to justify charging the fee. Additionally, the lawsuit accuses DoorDash of charging the expanded range fee to iPhone users but not Android users, even when they make the same order, at the same time, and to be delivered to the same location.

DoorDash’s Response
DoorDash denied the allegations, stating that any pricing discrepancies between devices could potentially be due to gradual rollouts of new features. A DoorDash spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to providing the best service and ensuring clarity for consumers to make informed decisions.

DoorDash’s Past Legal Issues
This isn’t the first time DoorDash’s fee structure has come under judicial scrutiny. The company faced a 2021 Chicago lawsuit, accusing it of using bait-and-switch tactics and misleading customers about where their money was going. Additionally, DoorDash paid $2.5 million in 2020 to settle a D.C. lawsuit alleging it misled customers about tip allocations.
