Opinion: Ari Aster’s Surprise Screening of ‘Beau Is Afraid’ is a Fun Prank to Pull on Viewers

Director Ari Aster knows how to pull off a good April Fools’ Day prank. Fans gathered at the Alamo Drafthouse in New York City expecting to see a director’s cut of Aster’s “Midsommar” and a special extended trailer for “Beau Is Afraid.” However, they were in for a surprise when Aster and Joaquin Phoenix showed up for a surprise screening of “Beau Is Afraid.” The film follows a paranoid Beau on a quirky journey to visit his mother, set to hit theaters on April 21.

Aster, known for his unique vision, revealed during a Q&A session that Phoenix fainted while shooting a scene with Patti LuPone. Despite the unusual Q&A, Aster explained his vision for the film: “I want you to go through his guts and come out of his butt.”

If you’re intrigued by the bizarre nature of the film, exclusive clips and trailers are available to give you a deeper look. But for those who were hoping for the director’s cut of “Midsommar,” it was a true April Fools’ Day trick.
