‘The Last of Us’ Co-Creator Neil Druckmann Departs Show Before Season 3

In a significant development, Neil Druckmann, co-creator of The Last of Us, has announced his departure from the series and will not be involved in the upcoming third season. Druckmann, who worked alongside showrunner Craig Mazin in creating The Last of Us and directed several episodes, shared the news of his decision on Naughty Dog’s official Instagram account. The Ankler was the first to report on this development.

Druckmann explained in his statement that he is stepping away from his creative role in The Last of Us on HBO to focus on Naughty Dog’s future projects. This includes writing and directing their next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, as well as fulfilling his responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative. Despite his departure, Druckmann expressed gratitude for his time working on the show and praised the cast and crew for their dedication to adapting the game series.

In response to Druckmann’s exit, Craig Mazin expressed his admiration for working with Neil and bringing his work to life on HBO. Mazin, a fan of Naughty Dog and Druckmann’s video game work, looks forward to playing Druckmann’s upcoming game while continuing to work on the show with the cast and crew. The adaptation of The Last of Us Part II was made possible by Druckmann and Halley Gross, to whom Mazin and the team are grateful.

Druckmann will still retain his credit as an executive producer on The Last of Us.
