Imagine this: a woman who is underestimated takes charge of a struggling sports team. Sound familiar? Nope, it’s not Ted Lasso, it’s Running Point!
And how about a story of sibling rivalry over a family empire? Not Succession, but Running Point!
Mindy Kaling, Elaine Ko, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen’s Running Point is like a mashup of two popular shows, with a touch of Kaling’s signature humor. It’s a sports comedy that hits all the right notes, thanks to a talented cast.
Running Point puts a basketball spin on the Ted Lasso formula.

Similar to Ted Lasso, Running Point takes us inside a struggling sports team, this time the Los Angeles Waves, inspired by the Lakers. The Gordon siblings run the show, and when Isla (played by Kate Hudson) is unexpectedly made team president, the real fun begins. It’s a story of family drama, basketball, and a lot of heart.
You don’t need to be a basketball expert to enjoy Running Point.

While some basketball knowledge might enhance your viewing experience, Running Point is more about the relationships off the court than the technicalities of the game. It’s a show about a dysfunctional family navigating the world of professional sports, with humor and heart at its core.
The Gordon family dynamic in “Running Point” leads to some hilarious moments, like a paintball shootout over player trades. The chemistry among the core cast, led by Hudson with impeccable comedic timing, is top-notch. MacArthur and Tarver as an odd couple, Theroux’s occasional presence, and Guido’s innocence all add to the fun.
Despite some pacing issues, “Running Point” is a sharp comedy that pokes fun at professional basketball and dysfunctional families with joy. Hopefully, it will follow in the footsteps of “Never Have I Ever” as another successful multi-season series on Netflix. With a longer season, it could truly shine.
Catch “Running Point” now on Netflix for a good laugh!🏀📺
