Opinion: Get EPUB files on Kindle

Creating Your Digital Library for Kindle

Kindles now officially support EPUB files, making it easier to transfer your existing library to your new e-reader. There are two simple methods to accomplish this: using the Send to Kindle feature or the software Calibre.

Using Send to Kindle Feature: The Easy Way

To use Send to Kindle, register your Kindle to your Amazon account, visit Amazon’s Send to Kindle page, and choose your EPUB files to upload. The process takes about five minutes per file.

Using Calibre: The Quickest Option

Calibre is a free application that allows you to upload and convert e-book files. Download Calibre, convert your EPUB files to a compatible format, and plug your e-reader into your computer to access and upload the files.

Step 5: Optional Auto-convert

If you forget to convert your EPUB files before upload, Calibre is a thorough program and will prompt you to auto-convert when you add your file to your device.

The Challenge of DRM Files

While Calibre is great at converting files for most e-readers, it cannot remove encryption on DRM (Digital Rights Management) files. This means that books purchased on a Kindle cannot be easily transferred to a different e-reader like a Kobo. It’s important to note that these processes of uploading EPUB files only work with unencrypted files for now.
