Google is planning to merge Android and ChromeOS into a single operating system. Sameer Samat, president of Android Ecosystem at Google, shared this information in an interview with TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff. He mentioned, “We’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform,” without specifying a timeline for the change.
Although the interview covered various Android-related topics, such as the enhancements made to Android 16 for increased customization and integration of Gemini across many features, the focal point remains on the potential merger of Android and ChromeOS into a unified system. This development has been the subject of rumors for years.
ChromeOS serves as Google’s operating system for Chromebook laptops, as well as other devices like Chromebit, an HDMI dongle, and Chromebox, a mini PC. It is known for being lightweight and fast, relying primarily on Google’s Chrome browser and cloud storage.
Integration of Google Gemini
- The Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 series is the first smartwatch to incorporate Google Gemini.
- Google Gemini AI features are being introduced to Samsung’s foldables lineup.
- Google Workspace is set to include AI assistants named Gems.
Although specific details about the merger were not disclosed by Samat, he expressed keen interest in understanding how people utilize their laptops and their productivity needs. Recently, Google has introduced features in Android, such as Desktop Mode, to enhance its usability on computers and tablets, effectively transforming a Pixel device into a miniature PC.
