Netflix subscribers hanging on to the streaming service’s most affordable ad-free plan will need to upgrade or say goodbye to their favorite movies and TV shows.
Social media users who are still subscribed to Netflix’s now-discontinued “Basic” plan are receiving notifications that their subscriptions will be ending unless they switch to a different plan.
“Your last day to watch Netflix is July 13th,” a message on the screen informs Basic subscribers. “Choose a new plan to continue watching.”
The message explains that the Basic plan has been discontinued and that new plans start at $5.99. The Verge was the first to notice an increase in Reddit users sharing posts about Netflix’s notifications regarding their subscriptions.
The End of Netflix’s Basic Subscription
Last year, Mashable reported on Netflix phasing out its cheapest ad-free tier.
In June 2024, Netflix tested removing the Basic subscription option in the UK and Canada before eventually eliminating it from the US offerings in July.
Initially, existing subscribers to the $9.99 per month Basic plan were allowed to keep their subscription as long as they didn’t cancel or let it expire. This plan offered the most affordable ad-free experience for users, limited to one device at a time.
In October, Netflix raised prices across the board, including for users still on the grandfathered Basic plan. At $11.99, the Basic plan remained the cheapest ad-free option.
Earlier this year, Netflix announced its intention to discontinue the Basic plan for grandfathered subscribers, starting with those in the UK and Canada. It appears that Netflix is now ready to completely phase out the Basic subscription.
Those looking to save money will have to settle for the ad-supported version of Netflix at $6.99 per month. The lowest-priced ad-free tier now is the $15.49 per month Standard plan.
