Advertisers in Canada Withdraw Ads from Instagram and Facebook

Canadian advertisers are boycotting Meta due to the company’s ban on news posts. Stingray Group, a Montreal-based music and video content company, announced on Tuesday that it will suspend all advertising on Facebook and Instagram in Canada in response to Meta’s decision to block news content. This move has been echoed by various entities in Canada, including government bodies and unions, such as the British Columbia government, the Canadian federal government, the Quebec and Ottawa governments, and the Quebec worker’s union. Canadian telecoms operator Quebecor and Cogeco have also pulled their advertising from Meta, according to Reuters.

Meta’s decision to block news in Canada comes in light of the Online News Act that was passed by Canada’s Parliament in June. This act mandates tech giants like Meta and Google to compensate Canadian news outlets for the content they provide on these platforms. News was officially removed from Facebook and Instagram in Canada on August 1.
