If you’ve ever downloaded a sketchy app in the past year that turned out to be a complete dud, it might have been trying to swipe your Facebook password. Meta recently dropped the bomb on at least 1 million Facebook users, warning them that their precious password data could have been snatched by third-party apps lurking in the App Store and Google Play. According to their report on Oct. 7, over 400 sneaky apps were caught red-handed, stealthily trying to steal Facebook login info and wreak havoc on people’s accounts.
Watch Out for Fake Apps
These cunning apps often masquerade as something innocent, like a cool photo editor or a fun game. But don’t be fooled – some of them are actually wolves in sheep’s clothing, posing as VPN services, horoscope apps, fitness trackers, or even business tools. While both app stores harbor these troublemakers, Google Play seems to be the hotspot for these shady characters.
How to Protect Yourself
If you’re worried that you might have fallen for one of these tricksters in the past, Meta advises taking action. Change your password, beef up security with two-factor authentication, and keep an eye on log-in alerts to catch any suspicious activity. And remember, always be cautious when an app asks for your Facebook login as the only option – it could be up to no good.
Stay safe out there, folks! And keep an eye out for those sneaky apps trying to pull a fast one on you.
