Penguin Random House Takes Stand Against AI Training

Penguin Random House (PRH), the largest of the Big Five publishing imprints, is pushing back against its published works being used to train AI. According to a report by The Bookseller, PRH has updated its copyright wording to specifically address AI usage. The new rules now state that no part of any book under PRH’s imprints can be used for the purpose of training artificial intelligence technologies or systems. This statement will be included in all new titles and reprints across PRH’s catalog.

PRH Leading the Way in Publisher Actions Against AI Scraping

PRH’s decision to modify its copyright terms in response to AI training marks a significant step in the industry. It is the first of the Big Five publishers to publicly take such action against AI usage. Other major publishers, including Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, and Simon & Schuster, have yet to make similar moves. The issue of AI scraping and copyright infringement has been gaining attention, with cases like The New York Times suing OpenAI and Microsoft and issuing cease and desist letters to AI startups like Perplexity, backed by Jeff Bezos.
