In discussions about gaming, conversations often revolve around the usual hot topics: PC versus console, and game recommendations. However, a crucial aspect often overlooked is the significance of accessories, which can dramatically enhance the gaming experience. The right monitor immerses players in the action, quality headphones allow for extended sessions without discomfort, and a responsive controller or keyboard ensures every action feels impactful.
Must-Have Gaming Accessories
Having tested numerous gaming accessories over the years, I find myself consistently reverting to a select few that exemplify performance and reliability. If you’re considering upgrading your gaming setup or are in search of the perfect gift for a gamer, here are five accessories that I wholeheartedly recommend.
1. HP Omen 27K
Without a doubt, the HP Omen 27K stands out as my favorite gaming monitor ever. This 27-inch 4K IPS display offers a stunning, vibrant picture, making everything from expansive RPGs to action-packed shooters visually striking. With rich colors, a 144Hz refresh rate, and a 1ms response time, gameplay is both fast and responsive. Compatibility with AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-SYNC eliminates screen tearing regardless of your graphics card. It truly encompasses everything a gamer could desire in a display.
Moreover, this monitor excels as a work screen too, with accurate color reproduction making it my preferred choice for photo and video editing. Priced at approximately $610, it might not be the most budget-friendly option, but it frequently goes on sale; I acquired mine a couple of years ago for around $350, making it a fantastic deal.
2. HyperX Cloud III Wired Headphones
Extended gaming sessions can take a toll, which is why comfort in headphones is paramount. The HyperX Cloud III excels here with its plush memory foam ear cushions, padded headband, and lightweight aluminum frame. But comfort isn’t all these headphones offer; they also deliver outstanding sound quality, thanks to 53mm angled drivers for crystal-clear audio and robust bass. DTS Headphone:X Spatial Audio support enhances immersion, allowing players to detect in-game footsteps in competitive shooters or get lost in atmospheric titles like Resident Evil 4. Plus, the 10mm noise-canceling microphone guarantees clear communication during calls.
HyperX offers various versions of this headset, including the Cloud III Wireless model, which includes Bluetooth support for a wireless experience. Additionally, the Cloud Alpha variant offers enhanced audio quality with its Dual Chamber Drivers.
3. HyperX Alloy Origins
It’s no coincidence that many of my top picks are from HP, as their gaming hardware consistently impresses me, including the HyperX Alloy Origins. This keyboard strikes a balance between size and functionality, making it one of my favorites for gaming and typing. It’s a full-size keyboard that fits comfortably under my hands, allowing for error-free typing.
The typing experience is delightful. The aluminum chassis not only provides a premium feel but also offers a solid foundation for the keys. HyperX gives users the option of Red or Aqua switches; the Red switches are smooth and only require a light touch to activate, while the Aqua switches provide a tactile bump for better accuracy.
4. Xbox Series X Controller
In the realm of gaming controllers, comfort reigns supreme, and the Xbox Series X controller is among the best. Its flared handgrips fit perfectly in the hand, ensuring a comfortable ergonomic design. You’ll immediately notice the textured finish on the rear grips, analog sticks, triggers, and bumpers, which provide a secure grip to prevent slipping during intense gaming sessions.
While this controller relies on two AA batteries for wireless play, it can also be powered via a USB-C cable. This design choice may be a matter of personal preference, as some may prefer a rechargeable option. Additionally, the Xbox Series X controller comes in a variety of colors, including Carbon Black, Robot White, Shock Blue, and special editions like Gold Shadow.
5. Samsung T9 Portable SSD
Completing my list is the Samsung T9 Portable SSD. It comes in capacities up to 4TB and boasts impressive transfer speeds of up to 2,000MB/s via USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. This drive can quickly transfer large media files and back up your gaming library within seconds.
Durability is a standout feature of the T9, as its rugged, rubberized exterior can withstand bumps, drops, and scratches, making it ideal for travel. Additionally, it supports AES 256-bit encryption to safeguard your files from unauthorized access. The T9 also works seamlessly with Samsung’s Magician software, a management tool that allows you to monitor drive health, install firmware updates, and optimize performance.
Honorable Mentions
Not every noteworthy accessory made my top five list. Here are a few honorable mentions that, while deserving recognition, didn’t quite make the cut:
- Western Digital Portable SSD: While not as rugged as the Samsung T9, the WD Portable SSD is still a reliable drive with competitive read and write speeds.
- Razer Viper V4 Pro: A lightweight, high-performance wireless gaming mouse designed for competitive gamers seeking precise tracking and quick response times.
- PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller: Sony’s controller boasts impressive features such as adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and ergonomic design. If not for its price, it would have taken the top spot over the Xbox controller.
- Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro 75%: A premium mechanical keyboard with a compact design, extensive customization options, and multiple performance modes.
