Is the character Nate from ‘Ted Lasso’ truly a villain? Actor Nick Mohammed shares his perspective on the matter.

The intense matchup between Richmond and West Ham in the fourth episode of the third season of “Ted Lasso” brings forth a clash of emotions and tactics. The defeat of the Greyhounds at the hands of “Wonder Kid” Nate, who not only secures a 2-0 lead for West Ham but also incites reckless aggression from the Richmond players, solidifies his position as an antagonist. Despite his villainous actions, actor Nick Mohammed does not see Nate as a true villain, emphasizing the exploration of his character’s origins in Season 3.

The toxic relationship between Nate and Rupert, characterized by power dynamics and manipulation, is showcased as Rupert uses Nate as a pawn against Rebecca and Ted. Nate’s idolization of Rupert’s wealth and glamour is contrasted with the realization of Rupert’s true colors, potentially leading to a shift in Nate’s perspective. The series hints at a possible redemption arc for Nate, as small acts of remorse and reflection are demonstrated throughout the episode.

The dynamics between the characters of “Ted Lasso” are evolving, setting the stage for potential conflicts and resolutions. The reveal of Nate’s act of tearing down the “Believe” sign adds fuel to the fire of emotions within the team. As the Greyhounds struggle to maintain composure and unity in the face of adversity, the narrative hints at future developments in the relationships and motivations of the characters.

Richmond’s Lessons and Potential Redemption for Nate

The disastrous consequences of Richmond’s ire are Ted Lasso‘s own way of saying, “Do not let your feelings about Nate take you to a place of aggression.” While this is an important lesson for the Richmond players to learn, it also serves as a potential cue to the audience about how to approach the characters this season. Who knows, we may be headed for Nate’s redemption sooner than we think.

“Whether Nate’s gone past the point of no return or whether he can be redeemed is yet to be seen,” said Mohammed. “And I think that a lot of that is in whatever the audience decides. For some people, I don’t think that Nate could ever be truly redeemed because of what he did. But I don’t see him as an out-and-out villain in the way that I see Rupert as a villain.”
